A Powerful Message!

I just recently received this email below.  I was so touched by this that I wanted to share it with everyone else.  There is nothing in this world more important than making our kids feel good about themselves.  In "normal" circumstances it is the mother that takes on the roll to teach our kids about hygiene.  This story below goes beyond the normal.  The email is from a single dad and I applaud him for caring about his daughter so much.

Here is the email
My name is Josh and i am a single dad with custody of my 6 year old daughter. I enjoy doing her hair at first i did simple single braids and even curled it almost to perfection which took two and half hours each time, it looked so awesome. I want to thank you for your blog before i found it i ran out of creativity and ideas with what to do with her hair.

It ended up down quite a few days this school year which she likes but it is so fun when i do her hair because of her excitement and how proud she is to tell everyone i did it for her. As much as i would like to curl her hair everyday it is just not feasible with the time not to mention the damage it would do. Your site has given me so many ideas and concepts to do her hair.

Thank you,

Friend's Post on Toddler Ribbon HairBand

I apologize its taken so long to post these cute pictures but here they are.
Katherine a blogger friend sent me these adorable pictures of her daughter.
She writes, "Hi, I've been subscribed to your RSS feed since my little girl's hair was long enough to put up. I've used your toddler posts as inspiration. Like the "Toddler Ribbon Hairband". What also inspired me was the hairbands where you make a small ponytail, then put it and some more hair into another ponytail. I've done that with my daughter's hair. I start at the back of her head, and go all around and back to the back, making a crown. As I go along, I loop ribbon around each ponytail. At the end, I clip the last ponytail with a hair clip. Attached are pictures of the results. The one with the white ribbon was when she was 21 months, and the other is at 22 months. Thanks for your ideas and posting them!!

Hair Tip

***A random tip*** When making french braids if you braid with the hair going over the top the braid will lay flat. If you pull the hair under the braid will be raised.

How to Make a Poof

I recently got asked how I do my daughters poof.  I am going to attempt to explain
With my oldest daughter we often times just pull her hair back and use the bobby pins to push the poof forward.  I also use a straight end comb (rat tail comb) and put it evenly under a small layer of hair in the front and pull slightly.   This smooth out the hair and poofs it up.
However if we want a bigger poof.  This is the trick we use.
Start by making your parts and pull the rest of the hair out of your way.

Next make a part in the center of your hair for the poof.  Move the hair across the front of her face out of the way for a moment.
Then pull the back half of the hair into an elastic and push it forward and secure with bobby pins.  **If you criss cross the bobby pins they say in much better.

Now take the front piece of hair and comb it over the poof and secure it with bobby pins.  If your daughters hair is too thin to stay with just bobby pins use an elastic and then use the bobby pins to push the hair forward.

The Messy Bun Step by Step Instructions

Recently I have had a lot of people asking me about my messy bun.  So here goes if these are not clear please ask questions I will do my best to explain what I do.

Because we don't just like plain messy buns at our house you will get a few instructions on rolls for the front of the hair.
I first made a roll across the front of her head this pulls all the bangs out of her face.
I then made a 2nd roll and 3rd rolls as shown below.  1 almost parallel to the first and the 2nd to make a t. I secured them in place with small bobby pins
Then I made 3 more rolls.  Another one parallel to the 2nd roll and one that follows the t shaped one.  The last one is parallel as shown below.  (I hope all that made sense if not try and look at the picture)
Now to start the messy bun.  Take all the hair and put it into a ponytail.  Don't pull the hair all the way through on the last loop of your elastic.
The back of the hair will look like this after all the hair is into the ponytail.
Now I take the hair that is looped and pull it upwards towards her head.  This makes a circle shape in her hair secure this with a clear small elastic.
Below is the hair after I have pulled the loop upwards.

Now bobby pins become your best friend.  I use bobby pins to put the hair where I want it as shown below.  If you put the hair into a bobby pin and it looks to small put your finger in the loop and pull a little bit.  You can also pull small amounts of hair and pull it to the other side and secure with bobby pins.
Below is the finished messy bun.  If this doesn't make sense please ask me more questions.

Question 16

t has left a new comment on your post "Question 15":

I have looked all over the area where we live and can not find the ringlet curling iron that you have in your post, or any ringlet curling iron at all. I do love the curls it makes to.

I have not looked locally for this curling iron since I purchased it over 5 years ago.  I did some research on the Internet and it looks like they have a new model out.  I have included a link to Target which has the new version, or just go onto google and type in "Conair Instant Heat Spiral Styler with Curl Press" that will give you a list of places to purchase a similar curling iron.

Walmart also has this exact curling iron on their website.  http://www.walmart.com/ip/Conair-Instant-Heat-Spiral-Styler-Curling-Iron/3999274?wmlspartner=GPA&sourceid=44444444440281551375

Question #14

M has left a new comment on your post "Make it or Break it Lauren's Latest Style":

im just wondering with this hairstyle how you get the braid to stay still while putting up the ponytail? i've used a hairtie but that was impossible to remove once the ponytail was up and tried bobbypins with a bit more success

http://thewrighthair.blogspot.com/2010/02/make-it-or-break-it-laurens-latest.html

For this style I used a clear elastic but the trick is to extend the braid a little bit father than the french braid goes.  On this particular day I just hid the elastic with the hair I pulled up.  If the elastic still shows I have also used cuticle scissors and cut the elastic out or I use a small bobby pin to use the pulled up hair to cover the elastic.

Question #13

A said... on Another Lauren Hairstyle

well, I am in many different sports, all I usually wear is a pony tail but I'm always looking for new ways to wear my hair, and I am in love with make it or break it, I've tried mocking her hair but it just doesn't work out! I am going to try this! does your hair have to be really long though?

No your hair doesn't have to be long to do Lauren's Styles.  In my opinion that is the best thing about her styles is you can do any length of hair because of the tight braids and rolls.

Question #11

A has left a new comment on your post "Sponge Curlers":

i love the look, but where can u get the sponge curlers?

I buy my sponge curlers at stores like Kmart, Walmart, or Target.  They have all sizes but I prefer the larger sponge curlers because they don't make the curls too tight.  I do use the smaller ones on my toddler since her hair is so short.

is the hair supposed to be wet or damp when first starting?

I always do sponge curlers with her hair all wet such as just after getting out of the bath tub.

Question #9

Question 9 "left a new comment on your post "Toddler French Braid":

I have one question. Do you always do your daughters hair for school?

Answer
My daughter gets her hair done everyday for school.  I do not however do a new style everyday and we only wash her hair every other day due to the fact she has eczema (which is dry skin patches on her arms and legs).

The new styles depend on my work schedule and how hard it is to get her out of bed.  During the summer she will get detailed styles on the weekend and during our vacations.  I will make sure to do new hairstyles during these times.

Question #8

Question about "2 Braids to Updo":

How do you get the braid so tight? My little one is growing her bangs out and we tried this style, it was really cute for about an hour and then all the little hairs started falling out. Any suggestions

A couple of things to try first french braid while the hair is really wet this makes it easier to control the hair.
When you are braiding make sure you keep pulling the hair tight each time you add more hair.  Also use your thumbs to keep the hair tight to the head this will help keep the braids in and tight.  I love the braid for growing out hair because they seem to stay in place on my little one.

I am still planning on doing a braiding video so keep watching for it.

Question #7

Question #7

Question on Updo Fun for HOT Days!":

very cute, I'm 13 and i need to put my hair up like this all the time, but my hair is much to thick for this style not to mention curly. any suggestions?   Some suggestions might be instead of the braids you could do several corn rolls, or twists, or puffy braids with pull through.  As far as your curls I think they would add to this style instead of having to make messy buns you could just leave the curls loose.  I wish my daughter has some curl to her hair it is stick straight.  I hope this helps and I will try and post some ideas.

Question #6

Question #6  on Sponge Curlers
Does her hair actually hold the curl?  Yes, my daughters hair holds the curl all day long.  When I first started putting them in I would put a little bit of gel.

I used to put sponge curlers in my daughter's hair almost every night  but when her hair got longer and thicker, it never dried overnight. I even tried the blow dryer in the morning, but it still doesn't dry all the way through to the bottom of the hair. I've tried several times since then thinking maybe it was just too wet or something, but I still haven't had any luck.   I use to have this problem with my daughters hair too.  I then started using more curlers because of the thickness of her hair the smaller amount of hair still gave her the loose curls and they dried all the way.
